Ghazal 370: What virtue do you look for from us? We have called the drunken to the feast

What virtue do you look for from us? We have called the drunken to the feast;
in the reign of your drunken narcissus we have bidden a quiet life farewell.

Open the door of the tavern to me, for nothing opened to me from the dervish lodge;
believe it or not, that was the word, and we have said it.

Because of your eye, O cupbearer, I have fallen into ruin, and yet
to the calamity that comes from the beloved we have said a thousand welcomes.

If you do not forgive me, you will be sorry in the end;
keep it in mind where, in your service, we said this.

I said that your stature was the boxwood, and it brought me much shame:
why did we make such a comparison, and why did we speak such a slander?

Like the musk-pod, my liver has turned to blood, and I deserve no less;
it is the price of our having spoken amiss to your tress.

You turned to fire, O Hafez, but it did not take hold of the friend;
it is as though we had told the east wind the tale of the rose's broken promise.

Interpretation of the fal

Outward piety is not for you, and you know it: you have let go of the quiet life and given your heart to love. You saw no opening where you had hoped for one: try another way. You have welcomed every hardship that came from the friend. If you said something careless, you have paid for it. Your ardour has not yet had its effect on that person: be patient.
