Ghazal 371: We have laid down our dawn lesson on the road to the tavern
We have laid down our dawn lesson on the road to the tavern;
we have laid the harvest of our prayers on the road of the beloved.
It sets fire to the harvest of a hundred sensible ascetics,
this brand that we have laid upon our maddened heart.
The Sultan of pre-eternity gave us the treasure of the grief of love
when we set our face towards this ruined halting place.
After this I will give no way into my heart to the love of idols;
we have set the seal of his lip upon the door of this house.
One cannot go on being a hypocrite in the cloak any longer than this;
we have laid our foundations on this way of the rends.
How does this wandering ship sail on, now that at last
we have staked our life on that single matchless pearl?
God be thanked that he was as lost to heart and faith as we are,
the one to whom we gave the title of wise and prudent.
We were content with a mere image of you, like Hafez;
O Lord, how beggarly in aspiration, and how estranged, we are!
Interpretation of the fal
Everything you had gathered from study and devotion you have laid down on the road of love, and this love is a treasure that was entrusted to you from the beginning. Keep your heart for one person alone. Give up double-dealing and go your way openly. You have staked everything on a single goal, so do not settle for little, and raise your aspiration higher.
