Ghazal 386: For God's sake, sit less often with the wearers of the cloak

For God's sake, sit less often with the wearers of the cloak,
and do not hide your face from the rends who have no order in their lives.

In this cloak there is a great deal of defilement;
happy the hour of the robe of the sellers of wine.

Among these who look like Sufis I have seen no true pain;
may the pleasure of those who drink the dregs stay clear.

You are delicate by nature and you will not be able to bear
the heaviness of a handful of patched-cloak wearers.

Since you have made me drunk, do not sit there behind a veil;
since you have given me sweetness, do not make me drink poison.

Come, and see how, through the cheating of these hypocrites,
the flagon's heart is bleeding and the lute is crying out.

Be on your guard against the warmth of Hafez's heart,
for he has a breast like a boiling cauldron.

Interpretation of the fal

Keep away from the company of hypocrites and pretenders, and do not turn your face from the sincere: there is a great deal of dirt in that fine garment. You are delicate by nature and cannot bear such heavy company. If someone has won your heart, ask them not to draw back now and not to turn sweetness into bitterness. Take care that your inner passion does not boil over.
