Ghazal 387: The king of those with boxwood stature, the sovereign of the sweet-mouthed
The king of those with boxwood stature, the sovereign of the sweet-mouthed,
who with his lashes breaks the centre of all who break the ranks,
Passed by drunk and cast a glance at me, the dervish,
and said: "O eye and lamp of all who are sweet of speech,
How long is your purse to be empty of silver and gold?
Become my servant, and enjoy all those with bodies of silver.
You are not less than a mote: do not be lowly, and practise love,
so that, whirling, you may reach the private chamber of the sun.
Do not lean upon the world; and if you have a cup of wine,
drink to the joy of those with brows like Venus and delicate bodies."
My elder who drains the cup, may his soul be glad,
said: "Keep away from the company of those who break their promises."
Take hold of the skirt of the friend and break off from the enemy;
be a man of God, and pass by, untroubled, the demons.
At dawn in the tulip meadow I was saying to the east wind:
"Whose martyrs are all these with their blood-stained shrouds?"
It said: "Hafez, you and I are not privy to this secret;
tell of ruby wine and of those with sweet mouths."
Interpretation of the fal
Someone of high standing has noticed you and opened the way to good things for you. Do not think yourself small: through love you can reach a high place. Do not rely on the world, and keep away from those who break their promises. Hold on to the friend and break with the enemy. Do not pry into secrets that are beyond your understanding, and attend to life's plain joys.
