Ghazal 417: My pleasure is lasting, from the ruby lip I desire
My pleasure is lasting, from the ruby lip I desire;
my affairs are as I wish, praise be to God.
O headstrong fortune, hold him close to your breast;
take now the golden cup, now the ruby lip you desire.
They have made a legend of us for our libertine ways,
those ignorant elders and misguided shaykhs.
At the hands of the ascetic we have repented,
and from the deeds of the devotee, God forgive us.
My dear, what shall I say to describe separation from you?
One eye and a hundred tears, one soul and a hundred sighs.
May even an infidel not see the grief that
the cypress has seen from your stature and the moon from your cheek.
Longing for your lip has carried from the memory of Hafez
the lesson of the night and the litany of dawn.
Interpretation of the fal
Your fal is a good one: things are going your way, and you should be thankful. Fortune has turned to you: hold firmly to what you have gained. Pay no attention to the talk and judgement of the ignorant. If there is a separation, it is hard but passing. Take care that this passion does not keep you from your good daily tasks and habits.
