Ghazal 437: O you, of whose lane the story of paradise is but a tale

O you, of whose lane the story of paradise is but a tale,
and of whose face the account of the houri's beauty is but a report.

The breath of Jesus is one fine point from your ruby lip;
the water of Khizr is an allusion to the sweetness of your lips.

Every piece of my heart holds a story of sorrow;
every line of your qualities is a verse of mercy.

When would the rose have perfumed the gathering of the spiritual,
if your fragrance had not shown it some favour?

We have burnt in longing for the dust of the friend's door;
remember, east wind, that you gave us no help.

O heart, your knowledge and your life have gone to the wind for nothing;
you had a hundred resources and did not make them serve.

The smell of my roasted heart has filled the horizons;
this fire within will surely spread as well.

If in the fire the image of his face can be had,
come, cupbearer, for there is no complaint against hell.

Do you know what Hafez wants out of this pain and sorrow?
One glance from you, and one favour from the king.

Interpretation of the fal

You hold someone so dear that you credit everything good to them. You have burned in longing for them and had no help from go-betweens. You have had much ability and capital and have not used them as you should: it is not yet too late. Your fervour affects others as well. What you want is simple: a little attention from them, and support from a person of standing.
