Ghazal 438: Salma, with the locks on her temples, has taken my heart captive
Salma, with the locks on her temples, has taken my heart captive,
and every day my soul cries out to me.
O beauty, have mercy on me who have lost my heart,
and be united with me in spite of the enemies.
O beloved, in the grief of the passion of loving you,
we have put our trust in the Lord of His servants.
O you who blamed me for the love of Salma,
you should have seen that fair face from the first,
so that your heart, like mine, would all at once
be drowned in love, in the sea of affection.
We will submit to the penalty, in the place of penance,
if you have seen from us a single improper act.
You must care for the grief of this heart, there is no help for it;
otherwise you will see what it is not fit for you to see.
The heart of Hafez has gone into the curl of your tress,
in a dark night; and God is the guide.
Interpretation of the fal
Your heart is someone's captive and your soul is restless. Ask them for kindness and union, and on this road put your trust in God. Those who blame you would be in the same state if they had seen what you have seen. If you have done something wrong, be ready to make amends. The road is dark, but there is a guide: do not lose hope.
