Ghazal 58: Our head of devotion and the threshold of the friend's presence
Our head of devotion and the threshold of the friend's presence,
for whatever passes over our head is his will.
I have seen no equal to the friend, though I set
the mirrors of moon and sun before the friend's face.
What account can the breeze give of our straitened heart,
which is folded, layer on layer, like the leaves of the rosebud?
I am not the only jug carrier in this rend-burning temple;
many a head in this workshop is the stone for the jug.
Have you combed your amber-scattering hair,
that the wind has turned to perfume and the dust smells of amber?
Let every rose petal in the meadow be scattered before your face;
let every cypress by the stream be the ransom of your stature.
The tongue of speech itself falters in describing longing;
what place has the split-tongued, babbling pen?
Your face came into my heart; I shall gain my desire,
for a good state follows upon a good omen.
It is not only now that Hafez's heart is in the fire of desire;
it has borne the brand from eternity, like the wild tulip.
Interpretation of the fal
You have put yourself in God's hands and accept whatever comes as his will. Your heart is heavy and its state is hard to put into words, but this is a good fal: the face of what you desire has entered your heart, and you will reach your goal. Your longing is old and deep-rooted; go on with the same trust and hope.
