Ghazal 77: A nightingale held a bright-coloured rose petal in its beak

A nightingale held a bright-coloured rose petal in its beak,
and with all that plenty it was pouring out bitter laments.

I said: in the very midst of union, what is this lament and cry?
It said: the beloved's display of beauty keeps us at this work.

If the friend did not sit with us, there is no room for complaint;
he was a king in full fortune and was ashamed of a beggar.

Our pleading and our pride make no impression on the friend's beauty;
happy the one whose fortune gained something from the fair.

Rise, let us scatter our souls before the pen of that painter
who held all these wondrous pictures in the turning of his compass.

If you are a disciple on love's road, do not think of ill repute;
Sheikh San'an had his cloak in pawn at the vintner's house.

Happy the time of that sweet qalandar who, in the stages of his journey,
kept the angels' rosary of praise within the belt of the unbeliever.

Beneath the roof of that houri-natured one's palace, the eye of Hafez
had the manner of gardens beneath which rivers flow.

Interpretation of the fal

Although you have part of what you wanted, you are still not at peace; this restlessness comes from love and there is nothing wrong with it. If they did not join you, do not complain or think less of yourself. On this road do not fear gossip or a bad name: great people too gave up reputation for the heart's sake. Give your heart to the maker of all this beauty.
