Ghazal 291: We have tried our fortune in this city
We have tried our fortune in this city;
one must pull one's belongings out of this whirlpool.
From so much biting of my hands and so much sighing,
I have set fire, like the rose, to my own body, piece by piece.
How it pleased me last night to hear a nightingale singing,
while the rose spread wide its ear from the branch of its own tree:
"O heart, be glad, for that harsh-tempered friend
will sit with a very sour face over his own fortune."
If you want the hard and the soft of the world to pass you by,
let go of your own slack promises and your own hard words.
It is time that, from separation from you and the burning within,
I set fire to all my goods and gear.
O Hafez, if desire were always within reach,
Jamshid too would not have been parted from his throne.
Interpretation of the fal
You have tried your luck where you are and it has come to nothing: perhaps it is time to leave and make a fresh start. Regret and remorse burn no one but yourself. The person who was harsh with you will suffer for it themselves. If you want life to go easily, give up broken promises and hard words. Know that no one gets what they want all the time.
