Ghazal 33: What need has one who has chosen solitude to go sightseeing?

What need has one who has chosen solitude to go sightseeing?
When there is the friend's street, what need of the open plain?

My dear, by the need you yourself have of God,
ask at last, for one moment, what our need is.

O king of beauty, for God's sake, we are burned up;
ask at last what the beggar needs.

We are people in need, with no tongue for asking;
in the presence of the Generous, what need to plead?

No pretext is needed if you intend our blood;
since the goods are yours, what need of plunder?

The friend's luminous mind is the world-showing cup;
what need is there to state one's need there?

The time is past when I bore the burden of the sailor's favour;
once the pearl is in hand, what need of the sea?

Go, pretender, for I have no business with you;
friends are present, what need of enemies?

O beggar lover, since the friend's life-giving lip
knows what is due to you, what need to demand?

Hafez, bring it to a close, for skill will show itself;
what need of dispute and contest with the pretender?

Interpretation of the fal

What you are looking for is close to you; there is no need to search far and wide. Leave your wish with God, who knows your heart and needs no pleading. Now that you are near your goal, you no longer need to be in anyone's debt. Do not argue with rivals or ill-wishers: your ability will show itself.
